UK Media: If the FA Investigates, Enzo Could Face Match Bans

Enzo and Argentine players are alleged to have discriminated against French players after winning the Copa America, with the fallout continuing. According to The Daily Mail, sports lawyer Udo Onwere points out that Enzo now faces the possibility of a 12-match ban. Despite Enzo’s public apology, this does not seem to have mitigated his offense. If the English Football Association takes action, this Argentine international may face severe punishment.

Per the FA’s regulations in August 2020, acts involving racial discrimination can result in a ban of six to twelve matches. Chelsea plans to impose internal penalties on Enzo, but considering the club invested £100 million to bring him in, benching him outright is not realistic; it might end with a fine.

Lawyer Onwere commented, “Behind Chelsea’s surface-level condemnation, they will back Fernández, similar to how Liverpool handled Suárez. The high value of the player means clubs must tread carefully when balancing their stance against racism with their relationship with the player.”

This controversy began after Argentina’s national team celebrated their Copa America victory, during which Enzo live-streamed the celebration and sang a modified song with teammates that included racially discriminatory content about Mbappé and several African players.

The video quickly ignited outrage within the French football community. In the Chelsea squad, many teammates have quietly distanced themselves from Enzo on social media, unfollowing him.
