Korean media Naver pointed out that, in the football matches of the President Kim’s Cup held on the 24th, three own goals occurred across four matches.
The 57th President Kim’s Cup was held at Dicheon Stadium in Cheongbuk City on the 24th. The match starting at 5 PM was shrouded in dark clouds and heavy rain from the onset. The raindrops were so intense they stung the players, and visibility was severely limited for everyone on the field. In this “water battle,” the ball would often stop due to standing water, through balls would halt just after being kicked, and players attempting breakaways would frequently slip and fall.
In the match between Gangwon Daegwallyeong and Incheon Ganghwa Sports, seven goals were scored, including an own goal each in the first half. Among the four Round of 16 matches played on the 24th, three own goals were recorded, with the other one occurring in the match between HAFA Club and Anyang Technical.
An interesting phenomenon was that all coaches, amidst the downpour, continuously shouted instructions to their players: avoid possession play, passing, or individual breaks, instead opting for “kick the ball into the air.” This advice was heard repeatedly throughout the matches.
This is not the first time that a storm has disrupted Korean football events. In 2020, Dicheon Stadium had to cancel games ahead of the 53rd President Kim’s Cup due to landslides caused by heavy rain. This time, despite the strong short-term rainfall, the matches could still proceed, albeit barely, with the ground drainage systems receiving much praise.
Meteorological authorities noted that more heavy rain is expected, which may adversely affect subsequent K League matches and Korean cup competitions at various levels.
