With 16 titles to his name, 46-year-old Riquelme has officially been inducted into the International Football Hall of Fame. At a gala held in Mexico, he received this honor alongside 17 other sports legends.
Riquelme said: “For me, being here is something very beautiful, I am very grateful for the warmth and respect of the Mexican people. These are wonderful moments that I will never forget. I am very thankful for the warm welcome I receive every time I come here. When I was young, I only dreamed of becoming a professional player, nothing more. I never imagined having such good fortune, to be recognized, greeted, respected, and warmly welcomed in another country. It’s all so beautiful. All I can say is thank you.”
“When I was little, I only dreamed of playing football, just so I could buy a house for my mom. That was my only wish from a young age. I had nothing else on my mind. I want to send a big kiss to the Argentine people, that’s my country. A big kiss to the fans of Boca, today I am thoroughly enjoying all of this.”
