According to the French media outlet Team Report, the Uruguayan Football Association has made a serious statement that it will appeal the suspensions or fines imposed on players such as Nuñez and Bentancur to the South American Football Confederation.
The Uruguayan Football Association announced on Thursday local time that it will appeal the suspension orders received by players including Nuñez and Bentancur to the South American Football Confederation. After the Copa America semi-final match, Uruguay fans clashed with Colombian fans in the stands, and Uruguayan players like Nuñez and Bentancur rushed into the stands to fight with Colombian fans. Subsequently, the South American Football Confederation stated that it would initiate an investigation into the disturbance and impose penalties on those involved. Ultimately, Nuñez was suspended for five matches and fined $20,000. Bentancur was suspended for four matches and fined $16,000.
For this reason, Alonso, the President of the Uruguayan Football Association, said, “We believe that under certain circumstances, these punishments are unfair, and the Football Association must seek justice for the players.” Currently, apart from these two players, three other players in the Uruguayan team have also received bans and fines, namely the left-back Oliveira who plays for Napoli (suspended for 4 matches), Barcelona’s central defender Araújo (suspended for 3 matches), and Atlético Madrid’s defender Giménez (suspended for 3 matches). Additionally, six other players were not banned but required to pay a certain amount in fines.
