UK Media: After Signing a Transgender Goalkeeper, Other Players of the Women's Football Team Refuse to Play

Recently, Sutton United Women’s Football Team signed a 34-year-old transgender goalkeeper, which has sparked controversy within the team, with other female players refusing to participate in matches, leading to the postponement of the league games.

The goalkeeper’s name is Blair Hamilton, who is a transgender individual. The club had hoped that this new signing would represent the team in the match against Ebbsfleet Women’s Football Team scheduled for Sunday local time. However, this decision caused dissatisfaction among other female players in the team, who refused to participate in this game. The club stated that they are currently unable to field players for the match.

Hamilton previously played for the Aberdeen University men’s football team and subsequently transferred to two other women’s teams, where she also faced opposition and protests. Damian Irvine, CEO of Ebbsfleet Football Club, issued a statement saying, “We are very disappointed by our opponents’ decision and deeply sorry to those fans who travelled to the stadium to watch the match.”

The move to sign a transgender player has also been condemned from other quarters. Former Olympic swimmer Davis criticized the signing of Hamilton as “irresponsible and dangerous, it’s cheating, and it puts female athletes at greater risk of injury.”
