Manchester United legend Ferdinand has expressed his dissatisfaction with the club’s decision to sell midfielder Scott McTominay, believing that the team cannot do without such a role player.
The 27-year-old McTominay joined Manchester United’s youth system at the age of 5 and has always been part of the club’s “homegrown plan.” According to the Daily Mail, Napoli will pay around £26 million to complete this transfer. This season, McTominay has come off the bench in all competitions, including the recent match against Brighton which Manchester United lost 1-2.
However, this transfer decision has been criticized by Manchester United legend Ferdinand, who considers it “unacceptable.” On his show, Ferdinand said, “I observe Scott McTominay and recognize that not every player can become a core or star player for the team.”
Ferdinand further explained, “To win the league title, you need players like John O’Shea, Wes Brown, Darren Fletcher, Hernandez (Little Pea), and our Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back then. They may not start every game, but they always step up in critical moments.”
Ferdinand emphasized, “Such players are crucial to the team, especially those who come through the club’s own youth system. Manchester United has always valued this. To find a replacement for McTominay, you might have to spend £30 million, £40 million, or even £50 million. It’s a risk, you can’t be sure how a new signing will perform, whereas with McTominay, you know what you get, he always gives his all.”
Manchester United hopes to create space and raise funds for the signing of Ugarte by selling McTominay. The transfer fee for Ugarte is expected to be £51 million, and Manchester United hopes this signing will strengthen their midfield.
McTominay enjoys high popularity among fans. Last season, he came on as a substitute and scored two goals in stoppage time, helping Manchester United overturn Brentford with a 2-1 victory. In March 2020, his stunning long-range shot helped the team defeat Manchester City, a moment that is particularly memorable.
