The Premier League’s Most Troubled Team? Everton Suffers Consecutive Losses at the Start of the Season; Manager: We’re Out of Money

In the second round of the 2024/25 Premier League season, Everton suffered a humiliating 0-4 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. This poor start to the season also highlights the financial difficulties the club is facing.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Everton manager Sean Dyche said, “In football, when people ask me ‘Why aren’t you buying players?’, my usual answer is ‘We don’t have money.’ It’s as if I’m unwilling to spend. In fact, I’m not that kind of manager who wants to save costs. Unless we get new funding, we can’t change the situation. That’s where Everton stands now. We have to sell key players. It’s a dilemma we can’t escape.”

Dyche explained, “Everton performed well towards the end of last season, but then we had to sell a player who was growing and playing a crucial role—Amadou Onana. After that, we brought in other players and started helping them grow and mature, making them core members of the team. It’s a repetitive process.”

Dyche admitted that the team cannot make any new signings currently. Due to violating the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules, Everton was penalized twice last season, losing a total of 8 points.

During the summer transfer window of 2024, Everton raised £71 million through selling players, the most significant deal being the £50 million sale of Amadou Onana to Aston Villa. However, the team failed to find suitable replacements.

Before the start of the 2024/25 season, Dyche stated, “It’s not just these players, any player could be sold. The club needs to better balance its finances.”

According to Everton’s financial report, the team has accumulated losses exceeding £500 million over the past five years. To raise funds for debt repayment and avoid further point deductions, the team has been forced to sell star players.

Everton’s poor start to the new season was predictable. Following a 0-3 loss to Brighton in their first match, the team suffered another 0-4 defeat against Tottenham, currently sitting at the bottom of the Premier League table with a goal difference of -7.
