According to the Spanish media outlet, AS, Real Madrid is preparing to let Andriy Lunin see out his remaining contract and leave the club as a free agent next summer.
Lunin has only ten months left on his contract with Real Madrid. The club has confirmed that the Ukrainian goalkeeper will not be leaving the team during this summer transfer window, nor in the upcoming winter window. Previously, multiple reports suggested that Lunin had received offers from several teams, but he turned them all down because he is still waiting for an opportunity to reclaim his position as the number one goalkeeper of the Galacticos. Especially after experiencing playing opportunities in the Champions League, Lunin is unwilling to lower his standards.
It is expected that Ancelotti will not completely sideline Lunin. The Ukrainian will be the preferred choice for cup competitions, such as the Copa del Rey, and possibly even the Champions League. Last season, Lunin made 31 appearances for Real Madrid, keeping 12 clean sheets, and his performance was commendable, which led some fans to be furious at Ancelotti’s decision to re-appoint the recovered Courtois towards the end of the season.
To prepare for Lunin’s departure, Real Madrid have already begun scouting options for their second-choice goalkeeper in the market. Kepa is one option, but he has extended his contract with Chelsea until 2026 and has been loaned to Bournemouth this season.
