La Liga Preview: Struggling Sevilla Seek First Win, Girona Hope for Away Success

On September 2nd at 1:00 AM, the Spanish La Liga will see its fourth round match, with Sevilla hosting Girona.

Sevilla has managed only two draws and one loss in their first three league matches, securing just two points. The Europa League champions have had a poor start to the season. Their opening opponents were not particularly strong teams; they drew 2-2 with Las Palmas, lost 1-2 at home to Villarreal, and then played out a goalless 0-0 draw with Mallorca. They are now in desperate need of a victory to boost morale.

Last season, Sevilla finished 14th in La Liga with 10 wins, 11 draws, and 17 losses. In 38 games, they scored 48 goals and conceded 54, with particularly poor defensive performances. During the summer transfer window, the team brought in Castellano to strengthen the attack and Agueme to bolster the defense, aiming to enhance both ends of the pitch. However, such transfers appear insufficient to reverse the team’s decline.

In terms of personnel, Saul received a red card in the last game and will miss this match, along with Ocamps and Suso who are sidelined due to injuries.

Girona has had a decent start to the season, with one win, one draw, and one loss, placing them 7th in the standings. They drew 1-1 away against Real Betis in their opener, lost 0-3 to Atletico Madrid in their second consecutive away game, and returned home to thrash Osasuna 4-0. Girona’s home ground remains as formidable as it was last season, though their away form is less impressive.

Last season, Girona enjoyed one of their best campaigns in recent years, leading the table for much of the season before injuries allowed Real Madrid and Barcelona to overtake them. They finished third with an impressive record of 25 wins, 6 draws, and 7 losses. During the summer transfer window, the club sold Garcia and Dovbyk for high fees, and while they brought in some replacements, the departure of key players has significantly weakened the squad.

In terms of injuries, only Justin Garcia and Ataro are listed, but neither has been officially included in the squad, so their absence has little impact on the team.

In the last five encounters between the two teams, Girona won all five matches. Both teams’ current form remains similar, with Girona still possessing considerable strength despite losing key players, while Sevilla has yet to find its rhythm. Although Sevilla enjoys home advantage in this game, they may struggle to withstand Girona’s attack.
