Premier League Preview: Ipswich Returns to the Premier League after Years, Liverpool Aims for a Winning Start in Title Pursuit

At 19:30 on the evening of August 17th, the Premier League will welcome its first round match-up, with newly promoted Ipswich facing Liverpool.

Ipswich was competing in the Championship last season and returns to the Premier League this season as a promoted team. It’s worth noting that this team was one of the founding members when the Premier League was established. However, it gradually faded and returned to the top flight only in the 2000-01 season, but was quickly relegated again. This time, the team is back in the Premier League after 22 years.

In the Championship last season, Ipswich achieved a record of 28 wins, 12 draws, and 6 losses, finishing second in the league table just one point behind Leicester City. The team scored an impressive 92 goals in these matches, the most among all teams in the Championship that season. Defensively, they conceded 57 goals, which, while not particularly high, made their defense appear somewhat weak compared to other top-ranked teams in the Championship.

The team has made significant personnel adjustments in preparation for the Premier League games. They released players such as Maks, Ndaba, and Miyaichi, and brought in Johnson, Greaves, Delap, Townsend, and Muric, among others. Although there are no big-name signings, the squad has become much deeper. However, during pre-season preparations, the team faced an injury crisis, with Clarke, Hurst, Broadhead, Humphreys, and Donachie all out due to various injuries for this month or longer.

Liverpool spent most of last season in contention for the Premier League title, but fell behind in the final stages, ending with a record of 24 wins, 10 draws, and 4 losses, accumulating 82 points and securing third place in the league. After the season, manager Klopp left the team, and Sloot, who shares a similar style, took over. The team will continue to challenge for the championship this season.

In the Premier League last season, Liverpool was 9 points behind the champion. Sloot sarcastically commented on Klopp in an interview: “Before the first round begins, it’s hard to discuss the title race. We need to see how our competitors perform. In the past two seasons, we’ve been too far behind the champions.” In reality, Liverpool’s performance was already excellent, scoring 86 goals in 38 games and conceding only 41, showcasing dominance on both offense and defense. With only four losses, the fewest among all Premier League teams, the team also demonstrated resilience with multiple comebacks from difficult situations.

The core lineup of the team remains unchanged this season, with Van Dijk still anchoring the defense, and Arnold, Salah, and Nunez leading the midfield and forward lines. Despite frequent transfer rumors surrounding them this year, Sloot firmly stated at the press conference: “They will all be on the roster for this game.” This indirectly dispelled the rumors. On the injury front, the entire team is healthy and available for the first league game of the season.

The two teams have met four times historically, but these encounters were in the Premier League during the 2000-02 seasons, more than 20 years ago. Liverpool had a record of 2 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss then, but this is of little reference value now. Both teams are capable of strong attacking and defensive play, and this game could feature an open and attacking style of play.
