Ten Hag: Zirkzee Hasn't Yet Reached His Full Potential, Maguire Not Injured

In the first round of the Premier League, new signing Zirkzee came off the bench to score a last-minute goal, helping Manchester United secure a 1-0 home victory over Fulham. After the match, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag spoke to the media.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Ten Hag said, “Substitute players are always crucial. It was great to see a substitute come on and score the winning goal in the first game. Everyone saw the importance of substitutes; they must be ready.”

“Playing against Fulham is always a tough match, but our defense and pressing were good. After ten minutes, we found our rhythm and kept applying pressure. We created many chances and should have scored earlier. The only criticism I have for the team is that they need to be more decisive in the box.”

“Two seasons ago, we had the most clean sheets in the Premier League. When we have a stable backline, we can defend effectively. If the backline isn’t stable, there will be gaps. I know Mazraoui well; he’s an excellent defender, very composed on the ball, but he hasn’t reached his best form yet. When he’s at 100% fitness, he can do more. He needs to improve his physical condition.”

“Regarding Zirkzee’s winning goal: For a striker, scoring is very important. He should be in that position, but his ability goes beyond that. He needs to find the right balance—he must be present in the box to finish goals, but we also want him to link up play. We have some excellent midfielders who can combine well with him.”

“It’s the first game, but boosting confidence is good. I see many areas that need improvement, which is normal.”

Regarding Maguire being substituted: “He wasn’t injured, but I had to take him off because he had some issues. Winning the match was crucial, but I’m glad no player got injured today.”
