According to German Sky Sports, Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich is currently the frontrunner for the next captain of the German national team.
Recently, Ilkay Gundogan announced his departure from the German national team, which also means relinquishing the captain’s armband he wore on his arm. Kimmich is currently one of the vice-captains in the national team. He made his debut for the national team in 2016 under then coach Joachim Löw. To date, he has played 91 games for the national team and, in terms of experience, is one of the few most experienced players among the current squad members, having also captained the team eight times.
Currently, besides Kimmich, the other two candidates for the captaincy are Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger and Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, the latter of whom is expected to replace Manuel Neuer as the number one goalkeeper for the German national team in the foreseeable future.
The German team’s upcoming international matches are against Hungary and the Netherlands, two Nations League fixtures, on September 7th in Düsseldorf and September 10th in Amsterdam respectively.
