Former Tianjin Jinmen Tiger Foreign Aid, Spanish Midfielder Merida Announces Retirement on Social Media, Ending 17-Year Career

On September 26, former Tianjin Jinmen Tiger foreign aid and Spanish midfielder Javi Merida announced his retirement on social media, bringing an end to a career spanning 17 years.

The 34-year-old Merida, who came through the ranks at Barcelona’s La Masia academy, went on to play for several clubs including Arsenal, Real Sociedad, and Atletico Madrid. In 2022, he joined Chinese Super League side Tianjin Jinmen Tiger on a free transfer, making a total of 45 appearances and contributing 5 goals and 6 assists.

He won the UEFA Europa League with Atletico Madrid in 2010 and claimed two Segunda Division titles with Osasuna in 2019 and Espanyol in 2021. He became a free agent in July 2024.
