Argentina’s Martinez Banned for Assaulting Cameraman

Argentina's Martinez Banned for Assaulting Cameraman

According to Argentina’s Ole newspaper, FIFA has decided to suspend Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez for two matches due to his misconduct in the recent World Cup qualifiers.

It is understood that the Argentine goalkeeper will be suspended for two games due to aggressive behavior and violation of fair play principles during the matches against Chile (September 5) and Colombia (September 10).

The Ole reported that Martinez himself and the Argentine coaching staff have been informed of the suspension and the fine he needs to pay (15,000 Swiss Francs). This punishment means that Martinez will miss the away game against Venezuela and the home game against Bolivia.

After the match against Chile, Martinez made an indecent gesture by placing the Copa America trophy in a sensitive area during celebrations.

Following Argentina’s loss to Colombia, he punched a camera, causing the cameraman to fall. These incidents forced Martinez to explain his actions to FIFA this week, which was also the final signal confirming his punishment. Although he anticipated being punished for the conflict with the Colombian cameraman, it still left Martinez disappointed.

So, who will replace Martinez? Although FIFA’s disciplinary committee has not officially announced the punishment, Argentina’s coach Scaloni is aware that Martinez will not be able to participate. Therefore, he plans to recall the three goalkeepers from the September list: Gerónimo Rulli, Juan Musso, and Walter Benítez. These players will all seize this opportunity to showcase themselves. In this “gloves competition,” Rulli stands out the most, having participated in five Ligue 1 matches with Marseille.
