On September 19, according to an exclusive report by the UK’s Daily Mail, if Manchester United continues with its plans to build a new stadium at a cost of £2 billion, they will demolish Old Trafford, as the club has changed its mind about retaining the old stadium for use by the women’s and youth teams.
It is understood that Manchester United previously revealed their plans to reduce the capacity of Old Trafford to around 30,000 people to preserve the club’s history and provide a venue for the women’s team and academy teams.
However, sources told the Daily Mail that they now realize this plan is unlikely to succeed, and in fact, a separate stadium project would be too complex and cost several hundred million pounds.
If Manchester United does proceed with the demolition of Old Trafford, they will establish a heritage focus group to ensure that historical elements of Old Trafford are preserved.
The report also notes that Manchester United has concluded that a capacity of 30,000 is too high for the women’s football team and academy teams. The Women’s Super League will kick off its season on Saturday at Old Trafford against West Ham United, with only one stand open due to low ticket sales.
The club believes it would be better to construct a 15,000-seat venue on-site in the future, which could be expanded as interest in the women’s team grows.
