Newcastle has officially confirmed that the club’s CEO, Darren Eales, has been diagnosed with chronic blood cancer and will be stepping down from his position.
Newcastle wrote on their official social media: “Eales will continue to lead the club’s executive team until a successor is appointed. Our hearts are with you.”
Eales arrived at St James’ Park in August 2022. During his tenure, Newcastle not only reached the domestic cup final for the first time in 24 years in February 2023 but also returned to the Champions League last season with a fourth-place finish in the Premier League.
Eales stated: “Being the CEO of Newcastle is an extraordinary honor, and I am very proud to have been part of this exciting journey of the club. However, I realize that now is the right time to make this decision so that I can prioritize my health and family. In the short term, the day-to-day operations of the club will continue as usual, and I will fully support the transition period so that the board can carefully evaluate and appoint my successor.”
