Following a match in the second round of the Coppa Italia where Genoa lost to Sampdoria on penalties at home, fans of both teams clashed outside the stadium leading to multiple injuries and arrests.
Both teams are from the city of Genoa, and their matches are known as the “Lighthouse Derby,” which has always been fiercely competitive in Italian football. However, due to Sampdoria’s relegation from Serie A, this was the first meeting between these local rivals in two years, heightening the excitement among fans. According to Calciomercato, the conflict started when Genoa fans provoked Sampdoria supporters.
Subsequently, clashes broke out, and riot police were quickly deployed to control the situation. However, during the confrontation, fans not only attacked each other but also vandalized riot vehicles and assaulted riot police. The unrest continued until around 2:30 AM local time. Ultimately, 40 people were injured, including 26 police officers, and 8 individuals were arrested.
