According to Spain’s Sport newspaper, barring any unexpected developments, Robert Lewandowski is set to extend his contract with Barcelona by one year, which will keep him at the club until 2026.
Lewandowski’s performance at the start of the 2024/25 season was reminiscent of his younger days – precise shooting, robust physique, lightning-fast starts, and an ever-burning fighting spirit. This vigor is not just due to his innate talent but also because he has almost impossibly high standards for himself. He refuses to let up even a little, fearing that his form might dip in the slightest.
However, Lewandowski did face some challenges. Towards the end of last season, his relationship with former coach Xavi was somewhat delicate, compounded by the team’s accumulated fatigue, affecting Lewandowski’s form. Fortunately, the arrival of new coach Julian Nagelsmann was like a breath of fresh air, revitalizing the team and helping Lewandowski regain his top form. The two have had a strong friendship since their time at Bayern Munich, making this collaboration a natural progression.
Notably, when Ter Stegen was injured, Lewandowski immediately thought of his friend Szczesny and played a key role in facilitating this transfer. Not only did Barcelona gain an excellent goalkeeper, but Lewandowski also gained a close friend in the locker room.
Regarding future plans, it’s clear that Lewandowski intends to continue writing his legend at Camp Nou. Barcelona also highly values this Polish striker, so the idea of extending Lewandowski’s stay for another year is mutually understood.
Lewandowski’s current contract is set to expire in 2025. However, the initial signing included a clause for a fourth-year extension if the player participates in a certain percentage of matches (close to 50%), which would trigger automatically. Given the current momentum, no one doubts that the Pole will soon meet this requirement. So far, he has started all official matches. He is the fourth most used player by Nagelsmann, with 804 minutes on the field, behind only Kounde (900 minutes), Rafinha (841 minutes), and Lamine Yamal (812 minutes). He is an indispensable player and a leader in the locker room.
