On October 2, in the second round of the Champions League, AC Milan lost 0-1 as a visitor to Leverkusen. Milan’s head coach Fonseca was dissatisfied with the referee’s decisions, believing that the referee missed a penalty for Milan in the final moments, leading to the team’s defeat.
Although Milan suffered defeats in both of the first two rounds of the Champions League, Fonseca remains satisfied with the team’s performance; “We did not win, but this game is still the most satisfactory team performance since I became the head coach of Milan. Most importantly, in the second half of the game, our performance was excellent, creating many scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, none of them turned into goals. Playing against a team like Leverkusen was not easy. Although I am not satisfied with the result of the game, I am very satisfied with the team’s performance.”
In stoppage time of the second half, Chilic was tripped by Incapie on the edge of the penalty area, yet the referee made no call. Fonseca was also extremely dissatisfied with this decision: “What I find strange is that VAR did not intervene; it had to be a penalty. I feel that in this game, the referee made decisions against us. I do not like talking about referees, but that is the fact.”
