Before Manchester City’s match against Arsenal this Sunday, the club will honor Sir Howard Bernstein (1953-2024), honorary president.
Sir Bernstein was a British local government official who served as Chief Executive of Manchester City Council from 1998 to 2017. He initially joined the city council as a junior officer and became Chief Executive in 1998, responsible for setting development goals and encouraging investment in the city. He also held the position of Honorary Professor of Politics at the University of Manchester.
As Chief Executive, one of his greatest achievements was bringing the highly successful 2002 Commonwealth Games to Manchester, revitalizing the city through sport-led regeneration and paving the way for Manchester City Football Club’s move from Maine Road to the then Manchester City Stadium (now the Etihad Stadium).
