During the match, some Bilbao fans set off flares, and others even fired flares at the home stands. Such behavior is likely to result in punishment from UEFA, which could significantly impact Athletic Bilbao’s return to the Europa League after six years.

Athletic Bilbao’s manager Valverde stated: “We haven’t been in the Europa League for a long time, and this match was crucial for us. I regret the behavior of some fans in the final stages of the game, which does not represent the stance of most fans. These people tarnished the match; they are a stain on the club.”

The Athletic Bilbao club also issued a statement condemning these extremist fans: “The club strongly condemns these fans. A small group of them set off flares during the match and threw some at the home spectators, violating safety regulations and tarnishing the image of the club. These individuals go against the values of the club.”
