Official news, Australia’s head coach Arnold has resigned.
Arnold’s performance leading the team was poor in the first two matches of the Third Round of the Asian World Cup Qualifiers, with an unexpected 0-1 loss to Bahrain, followed by a draw against Indonesia, resulting in no wins in both matches.
Arnold is the longest-serving head coach in Australian history, having taken charge of the Australian men’s national team since August 2018. This is his return after briefly serving as interim coach from 2006 to 2007. Under his leadership, the team advanced from the group stage at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, which was only the second time in Australian history that they progressed from the group stage of the World Cup.
Earlier this week, he informed the Football Association of Australia of his desire to resign, and the board accepted it. The Football Association of Australia will appoint a new head coach before the next international break in October.
On October 10, 2024, Australia will host the Chinese men’s national team at home.
