Since Popovic became the head coach of the Australian national team, two players who previously announced their retirement from the national team, Rogic and Langerak, are expected to make a comeback. Popovic has stated that the door is open for both players.
Popovic revealed that he hopes Rogic and Langerak can return to the team for the two matches against China and Japan in October during the top 18 games. However, he will not beg them to change their minds about leaving the national team.
Rogic announced his retirement from the Australian national team last year to focus on club competitions. Last season, Rogic helped Ipswich return to the Premier League and signed a contract extension until 2025. The reason for Rogic’s departure from the national team was a disagreement with former coach Arnold. Before his departure, Rogic served as the vice-captain of the Australian national team.
Langerak announced his retirement from the Australian national team in 2021 due to the challenging circumstances at the time that made international travel difficult. He later withdrew this decision but still did not make it into the squad for Australia’s World Cup campaign in Qatar.
Popovic stated that before announcing the squad for the matches against China and Japan in October, he remains open to everyone. However, he also emphasized that he would not make additional efforts to bring back Langerak and Rogic to the national team. “It depends on their attitude. They have announced their retirement from the national team. If they want to return, they must provide an explanation. If they are willing, we can consider calling them up.”
