In an interview with Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, midfielder Wijnaldum addressed the speculation about a potential move to Real Madrid. He stated that it’s all fiction created by Spanish media.
The 26-year-old, currently playing for PSV Eindhoven, is also part of the Netherlands squad for the upcoming Euros. Following Toni Kroos’ retirement, some reports have linked him with Madrid as a suitable replacement. Wijnaldum commented, “These rumors are not true. I’m flattered but also uncomfortable because it’s a lie. I’m tired of it, having to answer these questions when there’s nothing going on. It started with someone on TV saying I could fit well, and then the Spanish newspapers started writing nonsense.”
Wijnaldum’s contract with PSV runs until 2026, and when asked by De Telegraaf if he’s contemplating a departure, he said, “If I were to leave, it would only be for a team that values ball possession. I’m not the type of player who spends the whole game chasing the ball in defense.”
