On June 14th, according to Marca, Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa is searching for a new club to maintain his form and secure a spot in the upcoming World Cup on home soil. Both Brazilian powerhouse Corinthians and Major League Soccer (MLS) newcomers San Diego FC are interested in the seasoned shot-stopper.
In the recently concluded 2023/24 season, Ochoa couldn’t help Salernitana avoid relegation from Serie A, with injuries keeping him on the sidelines for the final matches. After Salernitana’s descent to Serie B, he left the club as a free agent. Confident in his ability to feature in the 2026 CONCACAF World Cup, Ochoa understands that regular high-level competition is crucial to realizing this ambition. Not being included in Mexico’s Copa América squad, his main focus this summer is finding a new club.
Despite turning 39 next month, Ochoa isn’t short of suitors. Spanish side Real Oviedo, currently competing in the promotion playoffs, expressed interest, but according to TUDN, Ochoa has turned down their offer. Brazilian outlet ge.globo recently reported that the former América goalkeeper has received an approach from Corinthians. With their starting goalkeeper Ramos leaving for Palmeiras and backup goalkeeper Coelho attracting interest from Nottingham Forest, there is uncertainty in the goalkeeping department, making Ochoa an attractive proposition.
Furthermore, MLS expansion team San Diego FC has also been linked with Ochoa. The club, set to debut in MLS in 2025, aims to add recognizable and experienced players to its roster to boost fan appeal. However, the lack of competitive action for the next six months could potentially deter Ochoa. If he were to join San Diego FC, it would reunite him with former Mexico national team teammate Jesús Corona.
