In the early hours of October 28, after a 1-5 defeat to Fiorentina in the Serie A match, Roma’s head coach Andrija Yurić was extremely disappointed. He stated after the game, “We have done very excellent work over the past 40 days, but tonight it has all gone down the drain.”
The Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport reported that following the 1-5 defeat, Roma might be facing another managerial change. Indeed, the Croatian coach is at risk of being sacked.
Yurić did not shy away from addressing the issues but was clearly very disappointed: “I didn’t expect this result. After seven consecutive focused and excellent performances, we made all the mistakes. Both our approach and attitude were problematic, as if we had forgotten the efforts of the past 40 days. I am very disappointed to see the players lose their concentration. There were many serious issues on the defensive end.”
Regarding the substitutions of Angelino and Cristante in the first half, he explained, “I made the decision to substitute them after half an hour to send a message and because I saw many things I was not satisfied with on a technical level. We needed to improve our offensive efficiency, but ultimately nothing went according to plan. There are no excuses.”
“If a team can concede only five goals in seven games and rarely face threats from opponents’ shots, it shows that the team has the strength. However, today our goals conceded were absurd. Such poor performances can sometimes happen, like when Atalanta experienced similar situations. Today it was our turn, but at least it was just for one night. We must start again.”
When asked about the possibility of being sacked, Yurić said, “You all know how the world of football works. I believe we did very well over the past 40 days, but tonight we threw everything away: the great matches, the growth of young players, the contributions of the veterans, all wasted. I am very regretful, but the decision is in others’ hands. Until tonight, I believed we were doing well. This team does not have a deep squad, and everyone needs to fit into the overall plan.”
Notably, Cristante, Pellegrini, and Mancini did not remain on the bench after being substituted. In response to this, Yurić was reluctant to comment further. He simply stated, “We must continue working. I still believe that we did a lot of good work over the past 40 days, and I didn’t expect it to be like this today.”
