J.League Holds Board Meeting, Announces Increase in Matchday Squad Size for Next Season

On the 29th of this month, the J.League held a board meeting and announced that starting from the 2025 season, the maximum number of players allowed to be listed for official matches will be increased. This change will be officially incorporated into the regulations immediately after the vote is completed.

According to the announcement, while the total number of registered players for the J.League Cup remains at 20, the total number of players that can be listed for each match in other J.League competitions (J1 League, J2 League, J3 League, Japan Super Cup, and promotion/relegation playoffs) will be increased to 20, up from the previous 18, adding two additional spots.

Notably, due to the rapid growth of young players in recent years, many clubs and media outlets have repeatedly expressed their hope that the league would increase the number of substitute players per match, providing more opportunities for young talent to gain playing time.

In an era where five substitutions are allowed, the J.League has remained cautious about expanding the bench, also taking into account the financial disparities among clubs. The decision by the federation to finally adjust the total number of registered players has been widely praised on social media.
