L'Équipe Slams Real Madrid: Failed in Voting, Failed in Morality, Held Ancelotti and Mbappé Hostage for Vinicius

Due to Vinicius not winning the award, Real Madrid decided not to attend this year’s Ballon d’Or ceremony, a move that has sparked widespread controversy. L’Équipe, the owner of France Football magazine, harshly criticized Real Madrid’s decision in an editorial written by Vincent Duluc. The article is titled “Real Madrid: A Failure in Voting and a Failure in Morality.”

Duluc wrote in the article: “On Monday evening, at the Ballon d’Or ceremony held at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Rodrygo was crowned as the Ballon d’Or winner, reminding the world that the charm of football is not limited to the performance of forwards. A midfielder receiving this honor represents both fairness and a strong message. It is a form of revenge by the ‘organizers’ against the ‘individual performers,’ and it marks the recognition of intelligence, precision, and team spirit by the 100 voters of France Football magazine, rather than relying solely on statistics and viewing forwards as the only kings.”

“Real Madrid could not accept the situation of not knowing the winner in advance, nor could they accept the winner not being their preferred candidate. Ultimately, due to the news of Vinicius not winning, the club refused to attend and held their other nominees, including Carlo Ancelotti and Kylian Mbappé, hostage, depriving them of the opportunity to appear.”

L’Équipe even pointed out: “The Real Madrid club chose to trample on the spirit of sportsmanship, which is respect for the winner, in a disgraceful manner.”
