In the early hours of June 20, 2024, following Germany’s 2-0 victory over Hungary and their subsequent qualification for the Euro 2024 Round of 16, the German Football Association (DFB) announced that they have extended head coach Julian Nagelsmann’s contract.
The DFB stated in a press release: “We can now confirm that Julian Nagelsmann’s contract with the national team will be extended until after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.”
According to earlier reports from Bild, the DFB had already decided that Nagelsmann would continue as national team coach through the 2026 World Cup. However, the extension clause was conditional upon the 36-year-old coach guiding the “German Machine” through the group stage.
Nagelsmann took charge of the German national team in September 2023, initially signing a one-year deal worth €6 million. Following a successful first half-year with the team, Nagelsmann has earned the trust of the DFB.
There was also a clause in the contract Nagelsmann signed last year, which allowed the DFB to terminate the agreement without compensation if Germany failed to advance past the group stage of the Euros.
With their 2-0 win over Hungary on June 20, Germany secured their spot in the knockout phase ahead of the final round of group matches. Under Nagelsmann’s guidance, the German team, with six points after two group games, became the first team to qualify for the knockouts of this year’s European Championship.
