Spalletti: I'm not particularly disappointed because Spain were stronger than us

In the second round of Group B matches in the European Championship, Italy lost 0-1 to Spain due to a Calafiori own goal. After the match, Italy’s head coach, Spalletti, spoke to the media.

Spalletti told Sky Sport Italia, “I’m not particularly disappointed because it was clear from the start that they were sharper than us. If you don’t respond at the same pace, everything becomes more difficult. When Spain has that ability to act quickly against you, it doubles the challenge. It’s a simple analysis – they were quicker in their choices, pressing, and teamwork, and it all came down to us not being as sharp as them.”

“Our formation was always stretched, and every time we regained possession, we lost it again. Our choices weren’t precise enough, and our reactions lacked logic.”

“We need to recover and analyze what we saw today in the right way. Sometimes we could make different tactical decisions to be more compact, but they moved and reacted much faster, and the gap was evident.”

“I think it’s a physical condition because mentally, we were in good shape after a decent performance. We faced a team that played well, and we should have shown ourselves to be equally proficient in possession, but instead, they reacted quicker. That’s where the problem lay.”
