The Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN), Erick Thohir, stated that the MotoGP race market in Mandalika, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, has been established.
This is evident from the increase in the number of spectators over two years.
Erick mentioned that the total number of MotoGP 2023 spectators reached 102,929 people.
The highest attendance on race day was 73,129, while in 2022, the figure stood at 102,801.
“This indicates that the market for races listed on the world calendar is starting to be mapped. From the beginning with audiences from Jakarta or East Java, even from Bali and Lombok itself,” Erick said, as quoted by ANTARA on Monday, October 16th.
According to Erick, the increase in spectators should be a subject of study for the Mandalika GP managers to continue increasing in the future.
Furthermore, Erick asked the MotoGP managers to showcase additional activities to attract more visitors.
“Extra events not only draw spectators but also enhance the appeal for both foreign and domestic tourists, creating economic impacts and multiplier effects for the surrounding communities,” Erick said.
Erick also welcomed the collaboration and synergy among state-owned enterprises (SOEs) like In Journey, ITDC, Pertamina, and other supporting SOEs, which facilitated the smooth running of this year’s MotoGP event.
He mentioned that the involved SOEs had meticulously prepared and improved the infrastructure, resulting in a much better execution of the MotoGP this time.
“I am optimistic that the 2023 Mandalika MotoGP will bring even broader multiplier effects. If last year’s economic impact on West Nusa Tenggara reached IDR 3.57 trillion, Jakarta IDR 300 billion, and several other regions IDR 626.3 billion, then this year we should see an increase in those numbers,” Erick said.
This year, the Mandalika circuit underwent several improvements. These included repairs to the track, marshals’ preparations, medical centers, paddock facilities, grandstands, and internal circuit areas.
One such improvement was repainting the kerbs and the starting area of the circuit.
Out of a total area of 27,380 square meters, around 22,000 square meters have been repainted.
New sensors were also installed in the track boundary zones according to the requirements of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) and the timing system.
