As a former world number one and seven-time DP World Tour champion, Luke Donald has long been a supporter of the British Masters, even hosting the event in 2016. At the end of August, he will join fellow former host and 2016 Masters champion Danny Willett at the iconic Close House in Northumberland for what will be Donald’s first appearance at the venue in his 23-year professional career.

Donald led Europe to Ryder Cup victory last year in Italy, and with his success and profile, the 46-year-old Englishman was recently announced as the 2023 captain, aiming to become only the second captain after Tony Jacklin in 1985 and 1987 to win on both home and away soil.

Fresh from competing at the Soudal Open in Belgium last week, Donald is now well-versed in balancing captaincy duties with his playing schedule, and he is eagerly anticipating his outing at Close House.

“I can’t believe I’ve never played at Close House given how many events I’ve participated in over the years,” said Donald. “So, I’m really looking forward to the Betfred British Masters there.”

“Close House is synonymous with golf in the UK and has hosted many memorable moments over the years. It’s one of the most iconic venues in the country, and the course is always in great shape. It promises to be a fantastic week.”

“I might be getting on in years, but I still love competing and trying to beat some of these talented young guys. I can’t wait to see everyone at Close House in August.”

Sir Nick Faldo is the host of this year’s Betfred British Masters, which will mark the 21st DP World Tour event at Close House. The DP World Tour returned to Close House in 2020 after a 13-year absence, and it has since hosted an event annually.
