This season, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team has clearly fallen behind their archrivals, the Red Bull Racing F1 Team. Despite catching up with the front-runners after mid-season upgrades, they still lag behind Red Bull. Team leader Hamilton has expressed his desire for the team to bridge the gap during the winter break.
Hamilton commented, “We’ve been playing catch-up for two years now compared to Red Bull, and we’re still in that position. That means we need to make sure we do a great job over the winter to halve the gap at least before the start of next year.”
The performance fluctuations of the Red Bull team from Singapore to Japan didn’t surprise the Mercedes F1 Trackside Engineering Director, who said, “I’m not surprised by their bounce-back; we’ve experienced similar in Singapore. I’m sure they were also affected by circuit characteristics. Heading into Suzuka, the word was that Red Bull would be back at the front – that’s not unexpected. Apart from Singapore, their car seems suited to any track.”
