In a thrilling battle at the São Paulo Grand Prix, Alonso highlighted that the defensive challenge against Perez was more demanding than his encounter with Schumacher in 2005 at Imola. He attributes this to the introduction of DRS, which has intensified competition, especially on tracks like Interlagos.
The two drivers’ fight for the podium continued until the finish line, with Alonso successfully defending against Perez’s comeback, securing a win by just 0.053 seconds.
Reflecting on the difference, Alonso remarked, “In 2005, it was simpler without DRS; the margin for error was narrower. Now, with DRS, the dynamics change, and the required moves differ. Tire management is also different – back then, you could push from start to finish.”
Notably, he praised DRS for enhancing the excitement, saying, “If you lost ground in 2005, it was game over. But with DRS, there’s a chance to recover, like yesterday, where you could be overtaken but still have a shot at redemption, particularly at Interlagos. If you’re passed at Turn 1, it’s not impossible to regain position at Turn 4.”
Finally, Alonso underscored the uniqueness of the Brazilian F1 Grand Prix, stating, “Interlagos always delivers incredible racing. This weekend was another fantastic edition of the Brazilian GP. Although it didn’t rain on Sunday, we witnessed an extraordinary race. The track consistently provides unforgettable moments, perfectly showcasing the essence of F1 – truly fantastic.”
