In the second free practice session of the F1 Grand Prix, McLaren’s Piastri led with a time of 1 minute 34.725 seconds, followed by Hamilton from Mercedes and Leclerc from Ferrari in second and third places respectively. Due to rain, only seven drivers set valid lap times during the session. Chinese driver Zhou Guanyu, who ventured out earlier for testing, ranked eighth.
As a result of the rainfall, most drivers chose not to venture onto the track at the start of FP2. Hamilton from Mercedes was the first to appear but did not attempt a timed lap.
Twenty minutes into FP2, the rain intensified, prompting the drivers to return to the pits and wait for any improvement in weather conditions.
A few minutes later, Norris from McLaren emerged with intermediate tires, finding the track not as slippery as expected.
With 45 minutes left in the session, only the two AlphaTauri drivers had set representative lap times.
In the closing stages of FP2, Piastri switched to soft tires for a flying lap, clocking a 1 minute 39.105-second time to move atop the standings. It seemed that track conditions were improving steadily.
At the end of the session, seven drivers had still not taken to the track for testing. The rainy conditions appeared to dampen the enthusiasm of the competitors.
