On June 24, the launch ceremony for the 2024 Men’s Davis Cup Final Qualifying Group Stage took place in Zhuhai, Hengqin. Founded in 1900 and organized by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), this prestigious event is known as the “Tennis World Cup” and marks the first time in its 100+ year history that it will be held in Asia. Underpinned by international innovation in commercial operations, the tournament is jointly operated by the New Silk Road Sports Group and Huatui Sports Fund, with support from Chinese-Singapore International Sports.
The competition runs from September 10 to 15, featuring matches in Zhuhai, Hengqin (China), Bologna (Italy), Manchester (UK), and Valencia (Spain). The 16 participating teams are divided into four groups for round-robin play, with the top two teams advancing to the finals held in Malaga, Spain, from November 19 to 24. In Group C, Germany, the United States, Slovakia, and Chile will face off in Hengqin, with notable players like German star Alexander Zverev, the 2024 French Open men’s singles runner-up and current world No. 4, and American top player Taylor Fritz potentially competing.
National Tennis Center Deputy Director Wan Jianbin commented at the press conference: “This is the first time Zhuhai Hengqin hosts the Davis Cup, an international team event, and it marks the sport’s departure from Europe to Asia. It reflects the ITF’s confidence and recognition of China’s tennis. As professional tennis continues to thrive in China, Chinese players are increasingly making their mark on the global stage, enhancing China’s influence in the tennis world. The Davis Cup’s arrival will further showcase China’s strength as a sports powerhouse, accelerating high-quality development of tennis in the country, and solidifying a strong foundation for the sport’s next surge here.”
Huang Yujie, Director of Social Affairs for the Hengqin Guangdong-Macau Comprehensive Cooperation Zone, said: “Located at the southern end of Guangdong’s Zhuhai, Hengqin shares a water border with Macao, serving as a gateway for the mainland to connect with the Pearl River Delta, Hong Kong, and Macao. As a national economic development zone, Hengqin plays a crucial role in promoting Macao’s diversified economic development. With the establishment of the Hengqin-Guangzhou-Macao Comprehensive Cooperation Zone in 2021, significant progress has been made under the joint efforts of both regions. This year, marking the third anniversary of the zone, we’ve seen fruitful results in areas like institutional innovation, rule alignment, industry collaboration, and people-oriented development. Hosting the high-level, international Davis Cup for the first time in Asia, Hengqin is committed to delivering a memorable tennis extravaganza, contributing to the growth of the sport in China, Asia, and worldwide.”
