Murray in action
Former world number one Andy Murray revealed details of his recovery from recent back surgery during a press conference on Sunday and said he is working hard to be ready for Wimbledon.
“The last 10 days have been tough since Queen’s, obviously. I had an operation on my back, which isn’t a small thing, and I’m just doing everything I can to try and get ready to start here,” Murray said. “I don’t know if that’s going to be enough. I’ve been training the last few days. I hit a set today. It was good, but my leg is not quite there yet, feeling-wise. It’s getting better every day. Like I said a few days ago, I’ll do everything I can.”
The home favorite suggested he might make a decision on playing at Wimbledon as late as Monday evening. “I don’t have any back pain, which is obviously really positive. The nature of my issue is that I had quite a large cyst that was pushing and compressing on a nerve, and then my right leg wasn’t quite functioning properly. It’s getting better. How long it takes for that to return to full function, it’s different for everyone. For some people, it’s a few months; for some people, it’s a few weeks.”
Murray is scheduled to face Czech player Jiri Vesely in the first round of singles and will team up with his brother Jamie Murray in the men’s doubles competition.
“It’s getting better every day,” Murray added. “Hopefully that continues and it would be enough for Tuesday. I’d love the opportunity to play here again. That’s what I want. I don’t know if after that I feel like it’s the right thing. But right now, I want that opportunity. My career is coming towards the end, and I’d love the chance to play here again.”
