China U18 Women's Basketball vs. New Zealand Preview: China Aims for Unbeaten Streak, Zhang Ziyu's Performance in Focus

On June 25th, the Chinese U18 women’s basketball team will face off against the New Zealand U18 team in the Asian Championship.

In their opening match, China’s U18 squad crushed Indonesia with a score of 109-50, securing a victorious start. The highly anticipated Zhang Ziyu delivered an outstanding performance, going 9 for 9 and scoring 19 points along with 7 rebounds. In the game, the over 2.20-meter-tall player made Indonesia’s defense seem powerless, contributing to China’s 59-point victory.

Zhang Ziyu’s exceptional display has not only captivated domestic fans but also attracted attention from American media, who marvel at who could possibly stop her. From her performance, it’s evident that she has significantly improved her skills compared to previous years, with high shooting accuracy. Coupled with her towering height advantage on the court, anticipation is high for her upcoming performances.

New Zealand’s U18 team suffered a convincing defeat at the hands of Japan, losing 47-84 in their first game. Scoring only 8 points in the first and fourth quarters and 11 in the second, the team’s strength appears limited. As such, they are unlikely to pose a significant challenge to the Chinese team.

In this U18 Asian Championship, China, Indonesia, New Zealand, and Japan are in the same group. Only the group winner advances directly to the semifinals, while the second and third-placed teams will compete against the other group’s second and third teams in crossover elimination matches. The real test for China will come in their final group match against Japan. Qualifying for the top four guarantees a spot in next year’s U19 World Cup, but China’s goal is to reclaim the championship title, which was interrupted by Australia two years ago.

Thus, besides Zhang Ziyu’s continued assessment, the rest of the Chinese team needs to step up and not rely solely on her. This way, China will be competitive against powerhouses like Australia and Japan.
