June 25th update: The Golden State Warriors have guaranteed center Kevon Looney’s $8 million contract for the upcoming season, per local time on Monday.
Before yesterday, only $3 million of Looney’s deal was assured, which is the final year of his three-year, $22.5 million contract. While this secures his spot on the roster for now, NBA insider Kendra Andrews suggests that Looney could still be involved in a trade, depending on how the Warriors adjust their roster based on the free agency market developments.
With Looney’s newly guaranteed contract and guard Chris Paul’s $30 million non-guaranteed deal, the Warriors’ current salary commitment stands at $175 million. Paul’s contract guarantee date is June 28th. Since being drafted by the Warriors in 2015, Looney has been a mainstay with the team and has become one of Steve Kerr’s most trusted veterans both on and off the court. In recent years, his voice in the locker room has become one of the most respected, especially during challenging times for the squad.
On the court, Looney saw reduced minutes in the rotation last season as rookie Tracy Jackson-Davis emerged as a key player. However, he still saw significant action against some of the league’s top centers.
