On July 3, it was previously reported that James agreed to a two-year, $104 million contract extension with the Lakers.
NBA insider Wojnarowski later reported that Rich Paul, James’ agent, is still in discussions with the Lakers about the possibility of James accepting a salary around $1 million less than the max, which would allow the team to remain below the luxury tax apron for the upcoming season and maintain roster flexibility.
The 2024-25 season’s luxury tax apron is set at $188.9 million. If James signs the two-year, $104 million max extension, the Lakers’ total payroll for the 24-25 season would reach $190 million. This would result in various restrictions for the Lakers, including the loss of the taxpayer mid-level exception, the inability to send cash in trades, the prohibition of trading first-round picks beyond seven years, and the restriction from signing players on the buyout market, among others.
