On July 17, the San Antonio Spurs defeated the New Orleans Pelicans 90-85 in the NBA Summer League. In this game, the performance of Pelicans player Luka Matković was nothing short of spectacular, turning heads everywhere. Unfortunately, his outstanding performance wasn’t enough to secure a victory for the Pelicans.
In the entire game, Matković scored 25 points with 11 out of 13 shots made, adding 5 rebounds and 3 blocks. During the match, Matković displayed an array of offensive skills, including alley-oop dunks, personal drives, strong plays under the basket, turnaround moves, and floaters, all with incredibly high shooting percentages. On the defensive end, Matković showcased his height and wingspan advantages. Just two days prior, the Pelicans had announced signing this Croatian national player to a 3-year, $4.9 million contract, a decision that now appears to have been a shrewd one.
Luka Matković was selected by the Pelicans as the 52nd overall pick in the second round of the 2022 draft, but he didn’t make his NBA debut immediately. Last season, he played for Slovenian powerhouse Olimpija, participating in 34 games across various competitions, averaging 15.4 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, with a field goal percentage of 63% and a three-point shooting percentage of 42.6%! Matković’s excellent offensive skills and extensive defensive coverage were on full display in this game. For the Pelicans, being able to lock down such a player for $4.9 million over three years is an absolute bargain when compared to Bronny’s four-year, $7.9 million deal.
