On July 16, renowned sports journalist Shams revealed the latest developments in the Golden State Warriors’ pursuit of reinforcements in his latest report.
Shams noted that the player the Warriors still want most is Lauri Markkanen from the Utah Jazz, and they have engaged in multiple rounds of discussions regarding a potential trade.
“In recent weeks, the Golden State Warriors have been most focused on Markkanen. The two sides discussed a trade package centered around Moses Moody, multiple first-round picks, several pick swaps, and a number of second-round selections. However, according to league sources, the Jazz demanded that the Warriors include the majority of their young players, including Moody, Jonathan Kuminga, and Brandon Pozdetsky, along with draft picks. Clearly, this was unacceptable to the Warriors.”
Markkanen becomes eligible for an extension on August 6, and sources within the Jazz organization have indicated that they would be willing to retain him unless another team offers a deal that truly satisfies the Jazz.
For Markkanen, signing an extension would mean more money, with initial estimates suggesting his salary for the 2024-25 season would be at least $33,138,600. It’s important to note: if he signs an extension on August 6, he can be traded during the following season – however, if signed after that date, he cannot be traded.
