August 3 news, recently, the locker of legendary Los Angeles Lakers player Kobe Bryant was sold for $2.9 million.
The auction house responsible for this transaction is Sotheby’s. They revealed that Kobe’s locker is the most expensive sports locker ever sold at an auction, and it is the third most expensive item Kobe has sold in an auction. Kobe’s jersey worn during his rookie season was sold for $3.69 million, and the jersey he wore during the MVP season was sold for $5.6 million.
The locker being auctioned off is one that Kobe used from the 2003-04 season to his last season in the 2015-16 season. During the renovation of Staples Center in 2018, a maintenance worker saved Kobe’s locker from demolition and sold it to a private collector. The locker had a starting bid of $750,000, but within the final twenty minutes of the auction, four bidders pushed the price up to nearly $3 million.
“Kobe Bryant’s locker isn’t just a souvenir,” said Bram Walkett, head of Sotheby’s Modern Collectibles, in a statement. “It’s a significant relic from one of basketball’s most iconic figures. Today’s price not only highlights Kobe’s value in society but also reflects the extraordinary nature of this unique item.”
Sotheby’s noted that some of the proceeds from the auction will “directly benefit” the Los Angeles Lakers Youth Foundation, but they did not specify the exact amount.
