Could There Be a Twist? Valanciunas Still Has a Chance to Join the Lakers in the New Season After Recently Signing with the Wizards

Earlier in the offseason, when LeBron James was considering signing a contract that would prioritize helping the Los Angeles Lakers. Center Jonas Valanciunas was one of several players linked to the Lakers. Unfortunately, the Lakers were unable to capitalize on this opportunity and make an impactful addition.

James ultimately signed a team-friendly deal to ensure that the Lakers’ total salary expenditure did not exceed the second luxury tax threshold. In recent weeks, discussions linking players like Valanciunas to the Lakers have not been as prevalent.

However, according to renowned sports journalist Brian Windhorst, Valanciunas still has a chance to join the Lakers in the new season.

“Do not rule out the possibility of Jonas Valanciunas joining the Lakers in the new season,” Brian Windhorst said earlier.

Valanciunas just joined the Washington Wizards via a sign-and-trade. In the process, he signed a three-year deal worth approximately $30 million. So hearing that he could still be an option for the Lakers might come as a surprise.

Should it happen, Valanciunas would provide a significant boost to the Lakers. Last season, he averaged 14.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 2.1 assists while shooting 54.6% from the field. Valanciunas also brings extensive playoff experience (58 games) and has performed well on the playoff stage, averaging double-digit scoring throughout his playoff career. He is still chasing his first NBA championship.

The Lakers’ quiet offseason has frustrated many fans, but if the team can complete a trade for Valanciunas at some point, it will add some new life to the 2024-25 Lakers.
