US Men’s Basketball Team Struggles in the First Half, Falls Behind South Sudan

July 21 saw a continuation of the US men’s basketball team’s warm-up matches, with South Sudan men’s basketball team as their opponent.

The US team started off strong, quickly securing a 12-2 lead. It seemed like the game would become one-sided in their favor, but South Sudan’s outside shots were on fire, hitting three consecutive threes and mounting a 16-4 run to take the lead. They maintained this lead throughout the quarter, ending up 26-24 ahead.

In the second half, the US team failed to regain their momentum, while South Sudan played more smoothly, scoring from both inside and outside. Jones’ successful 2+1 pushed South Sudan’s lead to 43-28. For over five minutes, the US team could only score six points, leaving Durant frustrated on the bench. As the offense gradually picked up, South Sudan remained dominant, maintaining their lead at halftime with a score of 58-44 in their favor.

The first half’s outcome was certainly unexpected, with the US team’s outside shooting only managing to hit one out of ten attempts, with Curry being the lone scorer. In contrast, South Sudan hit seven out of fourteen attempts, which was crucial for their lead. Only one US player scored in double digits in the first half: LeBron James with 12 points and 5 rebounds, Embiid with 8 points, and Edwards with 8 points.
