On August 5th, France’s women’s basketball team lost to Canada, marking the end of China’s women’s basketball team’s participation in the Paris Olympics.
Beforehand, China’s women’s basketball team could be assured of advancing with the fulfillment of any one of four major conditions, but a series of unexpected outcomes in subsequent games led to China’s eventual disappointment.
The four conditions that would have allowed China’s women’s basketball team to advance, if met, were:
- France’s women’s basketball team defeating Australia’s women’s basketball team (France lost 72-79).
- Canada’s women’s basketball team defeating Nigeria’s women’s basketball team with a scoring margin not exceeding 25 points (Nigeria defeated Canada 79-70).
- Belgium’s women’s basketball team not winning by more than 27 points against Japan’s women’s basketball team (Belgium won 85-58, thus by 27 points).
- Japan’s women’s basketball team not winning by more than 37 points against Belgium’s women’s basketball team (Japan lost the game).
