On August 7, in the Olympic men’s basketball quarterfinals, the Australian men’s team lost 90-95 in overtime against Serbia, ending their run in the top eight.
Post-match, @BasketNews reported that 71-year-old Australian head coach Goor is expected to step down. The team’s mainstay, Mills, who will turn 36 soon, is likely to retire from the national team.
The current 71-year-old Goor returned to the Australian men’s team as head coach in 2020. He led Australia to a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, a tenth-place finish at the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, and an elimination in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Previously, Goor served as head coach of the Australian men’s team from 2001 to 2009, leading them to ninth place at the 2004 Athens Olympics and seventh place at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
In 2009, Goor became the technical advisor for the Dongguan men’s team (now known as the Shenzhen men’s team) and the Chinese men’s team.
From 2010 to 2015, Goor was the head coach of the Dongguan men’s team for five consecutive years, leading them into the playoffs each time.
After leaving Dongguan in 2015, Goor served as assistant coach for the Guangdong, Shanghai, and Xinjiang Flying Tigers teams.
In 2022, the Hong Kong Bay Area Kung Fu Wings announced the signing of Goor.
Mills had an outstanding performance yesterday. The veteran, who will turn 36 in a few days, started and played 35 minutes, making 11 of 21 shots, including 2 of 5 three-pointers and 2 of 2 free throws, for a total of 26 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals.
