September 22 news, Divac still refuses to admit that not drafting Luka Doncic during the draft was a mistake.
Divac once served as the general manager of the Sacramento Kings. During the 2018 NBA Draft, he used the second overall pick to select forward Marvin Bagley III instead of Doncic.
Six years have passed, and recently, when revisiting this topic, Divac indicated that he is not yet ready to admit that not choosing Luka Doncic was a mistake. His reason is that the team was betting on the rise of star guard De’Aaron Fox at the time.
“At that position, I already had Fox, whom I drafted a year ago,” said Divac. “At the time, I believed that Fox could become a star player for our team in the coming years.”
“Time will tell if I was wrong,” Divac added. “From the current situation, it seems like I was wrong, but I still believe Fox will have a great career.”
Fox, an All-NBA player, All-Star, and winner of the Clutch Player of the Year award, has become the undisputed leader and spokesperson of the Kings. However, Bagley is not the same case. The player from Duke University left Sacramento for the Detroit Pistons before the 2022 NBA trade deadline after three and a half lackluster seasons with the Kings.
So did Divac consider pairing Fox with Doncic in the Kings?
“No,” Divac added. “Irving is just like Luka, a classic scorer. Fox isn’t; he’s a playmaker who needs the ball, just like Doncic.” “I could have chosen Luka, but then I would have had to trade Fox. Interestingly, the Phoenix Suns also didn’t choose Doncic.”
“I enjoy watching Luka play; I really like his style of basketball. I had my reasons for making this decision. Perhaps I made a mistake, but time will tell everything.”
