Turkish Men's Basketball Coach Apologizes to Fenerbahce: The '3-1' Gesture Was Not Meant to Offend Any Community

On September 25, Ergin Ataman, head coach of the Turkish men’s basketball team and Panathinaikos, apologized to Fenerbahce: the ‘3-1’ gesture was not meant to offend any community.

Previously, Galatasaray’s men’s football team defeated Fenerbahce’s men’s football team 3-1. In a friendly match at home against Panathinaikos’ men’s basketball team, Ataman, the head coach of Panathinaikos, made a ‘3-1’ gesture towards Galatasaray fans, referring to this derby match.

Ataman acknowledged that the gesture he made towards the stands after the game against Galatasaray hurt the Fenerbahce community, saying, “I apologize to the entire Fenerbahce community for the harm caused by this incident.”

“After last night’s friendly match against Galatasaray, in response to the fans, I first celebrated with my classic fist pump and then unexpectedly made the ‘3-1’ gesture. When making this gesture, I did not intend to target or offend any community.”

According to reports, Fenerbahce announced that Ataman’s behavior exceeded the conduct expected of a national team coach, and as long as he remains in his position, they will not release any players to the national team.
