NBA New Season Preview: Lakers - James Takes a Pay Cut but Fails to Attract Stars; Will Bronny Bring a Surprise?

The new NBA season is about to begin, and today we introduce you to the Western Conference powerhouse – the Los Angeles Lakers.

Review of Last Season:

Last season, the Lakers, led by LeBron James and Anthony Davis, achieved a record of 47 wins and 35 losses in the regular season, ranking 8th in the West. In the playoffs, they faced the Denver Nuggets, who topped the Western Conference during the regular season. After a grueling five-game series, the Lakers were ultimately defeated with a score of 1-4, ending their playoff run in the first round.

Offseason Changes:

The Lakers did not make significant acquisitions this summer. Despite LeBron James’ willingness to take a pay cut to recruit star players, players like Klay Thompson and DeMar DeRozan did not respond. The biggest variable for the team may be the appointment of former NBA player JJ Redick as the new head coach, replacing Darvin Ham. This rookie head coach, who has no coaching experience, was once jokingly referred to by fans as “becoming the head coach after doing a few shows with James.”

In terms of rookies, the Lakers selected Tennessee University scorer Dalton Knecht with the 17th overall pick in the first round and LeBron James’ eldest son, Bronny James, with the 55th overall pick in the second round.

Outlook for the New Season:

Firstly, there are doubts about Redick’s coaching abilities, given that he has never even served as an assistant coach. However, compared to his coaching skills, maintaining good relationships with star players might be more important for an NBA head coach, which could be why the Lakers chose Redick.

Secondly, the performances of the two rookies will be crucial. Without any major signings or additions of experienced players, the levels of Knecht and Bronny will determine whether the team can inject fresh blood quickly. Judging from their Summer League performances, Knecht undoubtedly showed more versatility, especially with his outstanding scoring ability, which the Lakers desperately need. As for Bronny James, the eldest son of the team’s top star LeBron James, although his offensive performance was average, he displayed good defensive awareness. As the biggest highlight of the new season – father and son playing together on the court – the Lakers will certainly give Bronny playing time. Whether he can seize this opportunity and stay in the NBA will depend on his own abilities.

Predicted Starting Lineup:

Russell, Reeves, Rui Hachimura, James, Davis.

Prediction for Regular Season Ranking:

7th to 10th in the West.
